I have many acquaintances and many people with whom I'm friendly. But my few close friends are all qualified as aspiring Buddhas.
Does the job require integrity? intelligence? compassion? non-attachment? humbleness? steadfastness? a meaningful sense of priority and judgment? loyalty?
Can the "more qualified person" surpass my friend in these qualities? If so, perhaps I'll befriend, and then hire him or her!
If not, my friend is most qualified for the job. This is so because my friend will do whatever it takes to honor his or her commitments regardless of the status of our relationship.
i can't imagine i would have a very big business - one in which a friend would need to apply. i did do business with a friend once, against my own better judgement. we are no longer friends. in fact, i not only lost her as a friend, but the small circle of friends that connected us as well. then again, maybe she was not truly a friend.
on the otherhand, i am a different person today than i was almost 10 years ago. i have a lot less fear and a lot more love -- and i stopped putting up with bullshit.
i am leary of hiring friends, although i can envision going into partnership with friends. it would have to be work that i thoroughly enjoy so i would enjoy my "work" time with my friend. for instance, i can see my girls and i getting crafty, or co-leading a workshop, doing satsung, teaching yoga, creatign a book.
i suppose if i had a business it would be a cafe attached to a yoga center. then, someone might have more experience working in restaurants, etc., but do they have the personality to keep customers engaged and/or happy? business is always about relationships! it depends on the friend.
i have some friends, who, no matter how flaky they are, i still love them. i would not hire them - but i'd be honest about why i would not hire them. some friends i would hire in a heartbeat - they might not be as qualified, but they would be earnest in their endeavors.
I'd give the job to my friend.Who cares about some schmuck? Qualifications? What kind of job is it rocket scientist? It is? well, in that case, I'll have to ask my friend to understand, because the other guy, ....or gal... is way better suited ...but then again if'n my friend goes and buys himself a better suit....Oh!
